การใช้งาน Article A และ An
1. ใช้ a กับคำที่เป็นพยางค์นับ (countable noun) ที่เป็นพยางค์เอก (singular form) และไม่ขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ a e i o u หรือ y หรือ ก่อนคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะตัวเดียวที่เป็นเสียงสระ (vowel sound) เช่น a book (หนังสือ), a table (โต๊ะ), a car (รถยนต์)
2. ใช้ an กับคำที่เป็นพยางค์นับ (countable noun) ที่เป็นพยางค์เอก (singular form) และขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ เช่น an apple (แอปเปิ้ล), an umbrella (ร่ม), an hour (ชั่วโมง)
ข้อยกเว้นการใช้ a: หากคำเริ่มต้นด้วย u และ eu โดยออกเสียงเหมือนคำว่า you ซึ่งออกเสียงเป็นตัว Y ซึ่งเป็นพยัญชนะ ให้ใช้ a
ข้อยกเว้นการใช้ an: หากคำไหนขึ้นต้นด้วย h แต่ไม่มีเสียง h ให้ใช้ an เช่น an hour
